Your Host: Ubi Dubium
I’m a mother of two somewhere in the DC area. Since I deal with devoutly religious people at work and in my community activities, I prefer to blog anonymously. I’m not a “new atheist”; I’ve been an unbeliever for upwards of 30 years.
My personal creed is more of a set of three mottos really:
- Ubi Dubium, Ibi Libertas (Where there is doubt, there is freedom).
- If you open your mind too far, your brain will fall out.
- We do not see things the way they are, we see them the way we are.

Good luck raising your kids to think for themselves. My kids are raised and gone. In my opinion, this one concept I value as paramount to the great responsibilty of parenthood. I salute you in the endeavor.

You comment on another blog really didn’t give me any choice. I had to come here and I have to follow you know. I hope you don’t mind! A good cup of coffee in the morning and reading through post and blogs that I find interesting, has become my new guilty pleasure. So I will take my time (1-2 cups of coffee) and will read your blog in the next days/weeks. So let me say “Nice to meet you” this way I feel like I don’t drink coffee with a stranger 🙂

Thanks, I’ll have to bring my morning cup of tea (Earl Grey, hot) to the table! I don’t post as much as I ought to, but I also spend a lot of time perusing other blogs. Looking at your “about” I see that we’re just about the same age. I’ve never been a smoker though.

Unfortunately, your first motto destroyed all the mystery behind your name. I was sure that you were naming yourself for some rare element like vibranium (which Marvel comics seems to have forgotten that it invented) or unobtainium and handwavium, which everyone knows combine to form wishalloy.
Now I’ll just have to live with the drab knowledge that your name is perfectly sensible.

Yes, I guess it’s a shame that it doesn’t mean something like “applied phlebotinum”. But years ago I first saw that phrase, and I immediately knew I had to use it for my blog handle. It refers to doubt, it’s in Latin, and it sounds like scat singing. How could I not use it?

My name is Tori Christensen! I’m part of a research project called America Families of Faith that is studying the relationship between personal beliefs and family relationships. (This is IRB approved research and so privacy will be protected.) We are looking for approximately 30 NONreligious couples in happy, stable marriages with at least one child to participate in our study. Being that your blog is so successful, I was wondering if you might know of anyone who would qualify and be willing to participate? Participation involves being interviewed together as a couple and it will take approximately two hours of their time. The interview will be conducted via Skype and will involve questions about personal beliefs and family dynamics. Each spouse will receive $35 as compensation.
I would greatly appreciate your help in identifying families who might qualify and be interested in participating. Ever since I looked at my Christian doubts head on, and been honest about myself, I have left the religion I grew up in, and have never felt better since. OK sure, many people are happy in religion, and that doesn’t bother me, but for me my former happiness was based on a lie.
