Just a quick post on this.
If you personally follow some religious taboo that harms no one, I don’t have a problem with that.
If you personally think that it would be a good idea if everyone followed that taboo, I don’t have a problem with that, either.
If you request that other people respect that taboo in your own home, and in your church/mosque/synagogue, that’s a reasonable request.
But if you think that it’s OK to threaten people with violence if they don’t follow your taboo in their own spaces and their own private lives, I have a huge problem with that. And if you think that because one religion threatens violence we need to tiptoe around their issues and not speak out against their bad ideas, I have a problem with that too.
Religious ideas need to be questioned. And religious ideas that are so weak that they cannot stand on their own, without threats, are some of the most important ideas to question.
