Disappointing Godbots April 2, 2012

I had a great time at the Reason Rally.  Even though I got there late, even though it rained, even though I had tired family members with me, I still had a great time.

But I had one letdown.  I was expecting something better from the religious types.  I had seen postings from them on various blogs indicating that they were really anxious to come and show us their “personal relationship with Jeeezus” that we somehow had never heard about before.  I was expecting something along the lines of a crowd of happy clappy  singing young people showing up from a mega-church to share some love with us.  Or a contingent of somber church ladies scolding us.  Or something else different for a change.

Now, I admit that I made it over to the “First Amendment” area late, so perhaps there had been somebody interesting there who had given up because of the rain.  But when I got there, here what I saw:

The usual nutjobs, that’s what.  A few individuals with signs and one-track minds.  No crowd of young people puzzled as to why we don’t believe when that’s what everybody does.  No thoughtful preachers who claim we are just misguided. Not even a single proper church lady.  We got the shouting nutcases.

So what were they doing there?  They certainly weren’t going to make any converts that day, that’s for sure.  There weren’t really enough of them to be showing off to each other as to how pious they were.  No, they were just racking up some brownie points with their god, and feeling all smug and superior by preaching at the heathen.   They were only there to make themselves feel good, not for the benefit of anybody else.  It’s emotional masturbation for them, and we’re the porn.

I think the term “Godbots” is a nice, modern update to Sheeple. Mind if I adopt it?

Oh, absolutely. I like both terms. I think of sheeple as the large majority that believe as they’re told, do as they’re told, vote as they’re told. I think of godbots as the ones actively pushing religion on anybody and everybody around them, without any consideration of who their audience is. Of course, there’s a large overlap.

I think of Sheeple as giant, wool-covered neanderthals with herding canes…and that scares me.

God-bots I like to think can be turned off. I know we’re both trying.

You didn’t mention the Cthulhu-bot.

Funny, I just found this web comic today with the Christian as a robot. http://dogmatic.colesmithco.com/

I’ve bookmarked that one! Is a dogbot like a godbot, only dyslexic?

I’ll probably write a post on the Cthulhu evangelist later. He was great.
